Mount Vernon is a city in Knox County, Ohio. It is the county seat of Knox County. Mount Vernon is named after Mount Vernon, the plantation owned by George Washington.
The community was founded in 1805 by Joseph Walker, Thomas B. Patterson and Benjamin Butler.
In 1833, Mount Vernon contained about 200 homes, 1200 residents, a court house, market house, jail, a few churches, dry goods stores, grocery, tannery, mills, and a dozen or so other small and needed businesses.
Mount Vernon is the birthplace of Daniel Decatur Emmett, author of "Dixie" and many other songs of the mid-1800′s. Dan Emmett is buried in Mound View Cemetery.
The Woodward Opera House, the oldest opera theater of its kind in the US and located downtown and continues to be restored. Its been a wonderful project to follow.
The Knox County Historical Society, with a building and extensive exhibits, makes its headquarters on Harcourt Road in Mount Vernon. Exhibits feature information about Daniel Decatur Emmett, Paul Lynde, The Cooper Company and other subjects.
The City's Mayor, Richard Mavis, has it all summed up when he says, "We are the perfect small city - large enough to provide excellent service but small enough to know our neighbors"
Mount Vernon Restaurant's and entertainment:
Ariel-Foundation Park is a gorgeous 250 acre public park that is currently under construction with some sections completed and ready to visit. The park is located within minutes of the historic downtown Mount Vernon. Folks will be able to enjoy the lakes, wooded trails, picnic areas, bike path, event center, a restored railroad depot, historical ruins, and more. The full project is expected to be completed sometime in 2015
Kokosing Gap Trail: Take a nice stroll or bike ride on the Kokosing Gap Trail and the Mohican Valley Trail which were built on former railroad beds.
Historic Downtown: Take an afternoon and walk the streets of "the square", Main and High street area. You will enjoy dozens of little shops and restaurant's.
